St Henry’s Facilities
Learning Resources Centre
In April 2006, his Eminence Wilfrid Cardinal Napier blessed the impressive new multi million rand Learning Resources Centre. A large gathering of benefactors, staff, parents and pupils witnessed the culmination of the drive to provide the College with a facility which would provide an academic heart for the school community.
The Principal, Dr Tony Akal, spoke of how the dream of the Centre had begun some eight years previously and of how, through the tireless efforts and amazing generosity of many benefactors and well wishers, that dream has come to reality.
The building is home to the school’s library, the archives of St Henry’s 78 year history, an internet research room with a capacity for 40 computers and an Audio-visual Distance Learning room with access to various educational channels.
The Centre is a wonderful facility where pupils can read for learning and leisure and where other related educational activities can happen in a beautiful and peaceful environment.
St. Henry’s Gym
The Fitness Centre operates throughout the year. The Centre has been upgraded with new equipment and is of a high standard catering for the needs of both pupils and adults. The equipment ranges from punching bags to cardiovascular machines to free weights.
The Centre is run by Marist Old Boy, Waynne Ashbridge (Class of 2002), a qualified personal trainer who trains the pupils and offers personal training when there are no pupils using the facility. The girls have had classes in Tae Bo and dance with Candice Pio.
The gym is open to the school boys, Grades 10 – 12, from 14.30 – 16-30 Monday to Thursday and 13.30 – 15.30 on Friday. The gym is open to a small membership at the following times: 7.00-10.00 Monday to Friday, 16.30-19.00 Monday to Thursday and 15.30-18.00 on Friday.
The Fitness Centre is always improving and various new programmes are being implemented this year. A rugby conditioning programme has been in progress, helping the squad of 25 Open Age group players to achieve a fitness and strength level appropriate to the highest level of school rugby.
