On Wednesday, Tatum Keshwar, Miss South Africa 2008 visited St Henry’s.

Miss Keshwar spoke to the girls from Grades 7-11 about her experiences as Miss South Africa. She emphasised the importance of preparation before undertaking such a challenge and how her faith had sustained her both during the competition and then during her time as Miss South Africa in 2008. The visit caused much excitement as autographs and hugs from the former Miss South Africa were the order of the day.

The Grade 8s have spent the last two days on their orientation programme.
The programme culminated in a social evening for their parents. The Grade 8s put on short skits representing the five principles of Marist education:  Simplicity,  Presence, Love of Work, Family Spirit and in the way of Mary. The evening concluded with a rousing rendition of the Paul McCartney/Rupert the Bear song, ‘We all stand together’ by all of the Grade 8s.

We say congratulations to Matt Gorlei (Grade 12, Deputy Head Boy) on being selected for the Junior Protea Fly Fishing Team for 2012.

The team will travel to France in July to participate in the World Championships. Matt attended trials in the Cape this in mid-January and went through a gruelling technical evaluation and interview procedure to secure a place in the team of five. Well done, Matt, a well-deserved achievement!

The College congratulates the 2011 matrics on their achievements. We heartily congratulate Ishan Maharaj who is the 2011 Dux. Ishan achieved 5 subject distinctions.

We also commend Tamryn Pillay on being in the top 1% of all IEB candidates for English. Tamryn received 91% for her final Grade 12 English result.

 Of the 39 St Henry’s candidates who wrote their Grade 12 exams, 38 passed. Our matriculants achieved a total of 42 subject distinctions. Three Grade 12s – Ishan Maharaj, Preolla Naidoo and Zoliswa Nxumalo – attained ‘A’ aggregates.

 In addition, a total of 85% of St Henry’s candidates achieved ‘BD’ passes, i.e. have admittance to university study. This places us above the IEB national average which is 81.67% for 2011. A further 13% of St Henry’s candidates achieved ‘Diploma’ passes, i.e. they have admittance to institutions which offer diploma studies, such as ‘Universities of Technology’.

Ishan Maharaj, the 2011 dux, rings the school bell on the Grade 12′s last day.

Matthew Allen (Class of 2010) has been our gap student in New Zealand this year.

For the past two years, St Henry’s has facilitated a gap programme with St Peter’s College in Auckland, New Zealand. A St Henry’s matriculant spends a post-matric  year at St Peter’s. The 2011 gap student has been Matthew Allen, while Kyle Bedderson (Class of 2009) was the 2010 student. Both were very well received and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The 2012 gap student will be Julia Hosmer.
