Rugby 2009
More than eighty percent of Senior boys played rugby this year and the College fielded three Open teams. The U14A side was undefeated and the U15's had a fine season. The 1st XV saw vastly improved results, the best since 2006. The spirit in which the players approached the game had great heart. Because the team is, on the whole, a young one, the 2010 season will be one to look forward to.

U/10 Rugby
What can we say about the team of 2009? In short, they were an enthusiastic group of boys who, unfortunately, were never able to live up to the motto of The Three Musketeers – “One for all, and all for one.”
Throughout the season we struggled with numbers and at no stage were we able to field two teams. The lack of numbers made it very difficult as all skills taught need to be practiced against some opposition before matches are played. Being unable to do this put us at a big disadvantage when we played other schools. This, together with the fact that we were unable to gel into a cohesive unit, was our biggest obstacle.
On a more positive note we were able to identify a number of boys who appear to have the potential to develop into above average players. Among the backs Davide Ferreri, Devon Murphy, Tiago Cipriano and Joshua Goncalves showed great flair on attack. Davide and Devon also proved to be fearless tacklers.
Our forwards lacked the commitment shown by the backs, particularly where team work was concerned. They tended to be very individualistic and often stood back waiting for somebody else to do their job. Players who stood out amongst this group were Caleb Benjamin and Dominic Wessels.
Besides the normal inter-school fixtures (4 matches) we also played in three mini tournaments this year. Our boys did particularly well at these tournaments and many important lessons were learned during these shortened games. All games played were “hard” fixtures with no quarter asked for nor given and we were very pleased with the sportsmanship displayed by this team in all their games.
We believe that this group of players has the potential to develop into a more than useful team as they progress in future years. There are some good ball players with tremendous skills in this group and once these are used to benefit the team, rather than the individual, the positive results will come.

Under 11 Rugby
What a season! It began with exactly 15 players turning out for the first practice – and I use the term “players” loosely. The numbers grew to 19 at one stage so everyone got to play in every match. The boys were filled with enthusiasm and, in the case of the front row, a very healthy lunch as well. It was clear that this would have to be a season of learning since the prospect of a winning season seemed quite distant. As a result, I would have to say that it was one of the most enjoyable that I have experienced as a teacher and coach.
It was evident at the outset that the tight five (or six or seven) were never going to get to the point of breakdown as quickly as the opposition. I am of the opinion that the concept of second and third phase play was developed by an Under 11 coach who calculated that the most effective way of using slow forwards was to tell them to wait for the ball to come out. In this regard, the boys were brilliant. Adhil Koobair made this his speciality and he was often seen breaking the line of defence of the opposition with his powerful and direct drives. He was ably assisted by the rest of the pack. The downside was that we often lost the ball in contact which, needless to say, impacted significantly on the outcome of the games.
There was a lot of talent in the backline. Perhaps their greatest challenge was adapting to the fifteen man format of the game where utilization of the whole backline became more of a factor than the ten man format used at the lower levels. In a few more years these boys will grow physically and in maturity so as to be in a better position to take on stronger and quicker opposition. Credit must go to the team captain, Tristan Kelly, who played at first centre with so much courage and determination throughout the season. He was ably supported by fellow team members who also showed flare.
It is always dangerous to single out a particular player in a team but my player of the season was undoubtably Daniel Yun who played at flank. His diminutive size was never a deterrent and he was an absolute livewire on the field. Getting to the ball earlier than most, he often got punished by the opposition but never relented – even when suffering physical and verbal abuse. Well done to Daniel and keep it up!
I would like to thank the whole team for their cheerful and courageous attitude throughout the season. I have no doubt that some of the boys will go on to be great players and I wish them well. Thanks also to the parents who came out to support regularly and assisted with lifts for the away games. It was very much appreciated.
Rev. M. O’Neill
