Primary Water Polo

Primary water polo is still in an embryonic state at St Henry’s and it has been difficult to get sufficient numbers to come to practice in order to put stronger teams into the water.
Twenty two boys attended the early morning practices and appeared to enjoy this discipline more with each passing week. A pleasing aspect here was that 9 of these boys are still in grade 4 or 5 and this augers well for the future of the game at our school.
Our 1st team went from strength to strength and by the end of the season were starting to play some very good polo. It must be remembered that for 8 of the 11 boys in the team it was their first exposure to the sport.
The 2nd team consisted of grade 4, 5 & 6 boys only. This group tried valiantly in all their matches but found it difficult when playing, on most occasions, against much bigger boys than themselves. The experience they have gained this year should help in the coming seasons.
Jean-Luc Tostee was very influential in the 1st team’s success as he proved to be a very good captain and led the team from the front. He always managed to find the positive side to whatever we did, both in and out of the pool, and continually encouraged his team with good advice on how to rectify their weaknesses.
Congratulations to Joshua Gaillard and Veshalin Naidoo who were both selected as non-travelling reserves for the KZN U/13 Water Polo team.
Finally I would like to thank our enthusiastic coach, Mr Mike Ford. Despite having a heavy schedule with end of year’ Varsity exams Mike never missed a practice and it is due to this enthusiasm that our boys have progressed to this point.
