Environmental Society

River Rafting:

The start of the Easter holidays saw the Environmental Society at St Henry’s go on what has
become their annual River Rafting trip. Nineteen of us went to Zingela on the Tugela River for three days of fun, fun, and more fun! The trip from Weenen is always a good "wake-up" call and the bouncing and swaying ensured no-one slept.

There were two stunning moonlit nights and most of us took advantage of these to go for walk. The early morning sunrises were great – for the few that made it.Water levels were low but that did not stop us from having a lot of fun. We spent two mornings rafting, the second morning saw some duels on the rafts that had been tied together...and there was always the zipslide on which to get re-introduced to the water!

The hospitality and accommodation were superb. We ate well, met some good personal challenges and came back wiser, dirtier and with great memories.

Environmental Society - Wonder Valley Cave
July Berg temperatures always provide a pleasant edge to the winter hike.  With Wonder Valley Care as an objective, a dozen of the College’s hikers descended on Injasuthi.  Snow-covered high peaks made a lovely backdrop to a relaxed day's “chilling” in the campsite.  Chanel Harvey joined the Penguin Club by going for a number of swims in the river.  Well done, Chanel!

A roaring fire and a braai helped keep us warm in the evening as the temperature quickly dropped to below freezing.

The next day saw Van Heynigen's Pass providing a challenge to our fitness.  Loaded packs and a seemingly unending uphill were rewarded with a fantastic sight to enjoy cappuccino (for some) and a snack. The cave was sheltered, warm and comfortable.  Byron Montague and Rodney Bengu soon made it “home” as they pitched their tent to create their mansion.

With a morning temperature of 8°, it was a comfortable stay.  The downhill on the return was easier on the calves, but harder on the toes.

Well done to Chanel, Rene, Aemey, Dylan, Matthew, Byron, Rodney and James.  You were good, well-prepared hikers.
