 Report - 2009

The High School Chess team has, once again, maintained a competitive standard of play and made the school proud in a year of challenging fixtures.  The club was rejuvenated by an influx of many enthusiastic Grade 8 learners and their potential indicates a promising future for St Henry's chess.

The team had convincing victories over Ridge Park, Port Natal, Westville Boys, Clifton and DGHS while our best efforts could not supplant Glenwood, DHS and Northwood.  The experience taught the players much and I hope the Grade 8 learners, who make up a fair portion of the team, use this knowledge to their advantage in the 2010 season.  Once again, the team qualified to play in Durban and Districts School Tournament, where we managed an admirable 5th place in a tournament of an excellent standard.

Finally, we would like to thank Mrs Vermeulen for managing the High School Chess for the last few years.  The time and effort she put into the chess club was much appreciated,  We wish her luck for future endeavours as she takes charge of the Debating Society next year.
