The College extends its deepest condolences to the Mkhwanazi family after the passing of Trevor (Class of 1994) in a car accident in April. He was a College prefect and Honour's Blazer recipient. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
The Year of The Priest Celebrations

From 19 June 2009 to 19 June 2010, the Catholic Church celebrates her priests. Pope Benedict XVI called for a "Year of the Priest" that will conclude with a World Meeting of Priests in Saint Peter's Square in Rome.

St Henry’s held its own celebration at the start of the second term with a concelebrated Mass with His Eminence Wilfrid Cardinal Napier as the main celebrant. Bishop Barry Wood was among the ten other priests at the altar. Principals, Head Students and Religious Education co-ordinators from a number of other Catholic Schools in Durban took part in the Mass, several of whom brought gifts to the altar and read prayers of the faithful.

The priests and our visitors from the schools were hosted afterwards at a brunch. It is hoped that this will mark the start of an annual gathering of Catholic schools on a rotational basis.

Exchange Student
Seen in the photograph above with His Eminence Wilfrid Cardinal Napier is Michael Kuhne, the 2010 Exchange Student visiting St Henry’s during the second term. He hails from St Joseph’s, a fine Marist school in Sydney, Australia, with which St Henry’s has had a good relationship for several years, with students crossing the Indian Ocean in both directions. One of our Grade 10s, Dean Munsami, is fitting into life at St Joseph’s at the moment.

It's Child's Play

The major make-over of the Pre Primary playground is virtually complete. The laying of artificial turf, installation of various tactile surfaces and of new playground equipment and landscaping and planting of flower beds have all given this area a dynamic new burst of life. The Parents’ Association and their enthusiastic band of parents are to be thanked for their great efforts!

Making the World of Difference

For the past five years, the Marist family at St Henry’s, in particular the Primary School, has been giving great support to the Child-Headed Households programme. A child-headed household is one which is led by a child under the age of 18. This child takes on responsibilities usually carried out by parents, including providing care to other children. South Africa has about 120,000 children living in a total of 66,500 child-headed households across the country. Appeals are made throughout each year at St Henry’s. Assisted by the Catholic Schools Office which identifies recipients, the programme distributes food, clothing, linen, toiletries and other goods through local schools to children in those schools. Special collections of items are made before each school holiday when these children will not be at school to benefit from the schools’ feeding schemes. Any donations from individuals, families or companies whose hearts are moved by the plight of these children would be most gratefully received.

Elevated Education?

With the growth of the College population and the addition of a fourth Grade 8 class for the second year running, teaching space is at a premium. A few days after the start of the first term, two prefabricated classrooms were gingerly and with great precision lowered over the boundary wall near the Main Gates and set in place in what was a parking area. The classrooms have electricity and are both fully air-conditioned.
