Religious Ethos
Religion is a central part of St. Henry’s Marist College and, through regular liturgical celebrations, para liturgical services, scripture readings and religious education classes, the school maintains a Catholic ethos.
Founded by St. Marcellin Champagnat in 1817, the Marist schools have taught students for almost two centuries about God, who loves and cares for them. The Brothers have been involved, at first directly and latterly more indirectly, in the students’ spiritual, moral, academic and physical growth since this school began in 1929.
Large group Masses and prayer services are held to mark the liturgical season. Mass is celebrated every Wednesday morning in the School Chapel and there are regular opportunities for confession, interviews, retreats, recollection days and class gatherings.
St. Henry’s has always had standing in the province of Kwazulu-Natal and has been known for its excellent academic standards, good discipline and a caring staff. However the essence of St. Henry’s is its Christian ethos, while respecting other religious traditions.
The school tries to encourage and deepen each student’s relationship with God. Those who are Catholics are encouraged to be actively involved in their parish and all students are encouraged to take an interest in cultural society events. By instructing them in matters of scripture, doctrine and morality, they are encouraged to live in the world as Christ-like people and respectable citizens.
